Galangal aka "Chewing John" or Little John Root (Alpinia galanga)

Known in the conjure tradition as Little John to Chew, this potent root has long been a staple of Southern Hoodoo practice. Carried over through generations of rootworkers, Little John Root,  a member of the ginger family native to Southeast Asia, found its way into American folk magic through trade routes and the hands of cunning practitioners who recognized its formidable power.

In the Hoodoo tradition, Little John Root is perhaps best known as a gambler's ally and a friend to those seeking favor in court. Rootworkers have long advised chewing a small piece of the root, holding the intention firmly in mind, and spitting the juice in the corners of a courtroom to bend the outcome toward justice — or simply toward your side. It is also carried for luck, commanding respect, and compelling others to see things your way.

Beyond the courtroom, Little John Root is worked into mojo bags, floor washes, and ritual baths for drawing good fortune and gaining the upper hand in negotiations and disputes.
